Before there was Mickey...there was Oswald!
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was an anthropomorphic rabbit animated cartoon character
created by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney for films distributed by Universal Pictures
in the 1920s and 1930s.
In the spring of 1928, with the series going strong, Walt Disney asked Charles
Mintz (Producer for the cartoon)
for an increase in the budget. But Mintz instead
demanded that Walt take a 20 percent budget cut, and as leverage, he reminded
Disney that Mintz owned the character, and revealed that he had already signed
most of Disney’s current employees to his new contract: Iwerks and Les Clark
were
among the few who remained loyal to Walt Disney and the Disney studio. Disney
refused Mintz’s demand, disassociating himself from Oswald after the series’
first
season. While finishing the remaining Oswald cartoons, Disney, Iwerks and Clark
created the cartoon hero who would become The Walt Disney Company’s lasting
symbol:
Mickey Mouse, the most famous of Walt Disney’s characters.
Oswald starred in a series of 26 silent cartoons made by Walt Disney between
1927
and 1928 for Charles Mintz, who contracted with Universal for the distribution.
When Walt lost the rights to Oswald, he came up with the character of Mickey
Mouse.
The Oswald character was later continued by Walter Lantz. Sound was added by
Universal, the copyright holder, to some of the Disney Oswald cartoons in the
early
days of television. Oswald was the first Disney character to generate
merchandise:
a candy bar, a stencil set, and a pinback button. In 2006, The Walt Disney
Company
regained the rights to Oswald, in a trade with NBC/Universal.
